Key Action 1 has been renewed under the Erasmus+ 2021–2027 programme with the introduction of Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). Developed by groups of higher education institutions adopting an innovative pedagogical approach, BIPs combine short periods of face-to-face activities with online learning and cooperation. These programmes bring together joint groups of students, academics, and administrative staff from different countries to collaborate on specific tasks collectively and simultaneously.

In a BIP, the virtual component is compulsory. The use of digital technologies enables the participating institutions to enhance their capacity to implement innovative teaching and learning methods and to reach a broader range of learners, including students from fields with limited mobility opportunities.

A BIP can either redesign an existing programme with new delivery methods or be entirely new, focusing on topics not addressed elsewhere. This format supports the development of transnational and transdisciplinary curricula, fosters innovative teaching and learning methods (including online collaboration), and promotes research-based learning through a challenge-based approach aligned with current societal needs.

Blended Intensive Programmes must award at least 3 ECTS credits to participating students. A Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) must be designed and implemented by at least three higher education institutions holding an ECHE, from at least three programme countries, through the signing of a multilateral inter-institutional agreement. Higher education institutions from partner countries can send participating students using the EU funds allocated to each institution for BIPs.

A BIP project is coordinated by an ECHE-holding higher education institution, which usually also acts as the host institution for face-to-face activities. In BIPs where the University of Cagliari is designated as coordinator, UniCa students can participate in on-site activities through a dedicated call for applications. In projects in which UniCa participates as a partner, the receiving (foreign) higher education institution hosts the participants at its own premises, or at another host institution or organisation (company, association, public body), provided that it is located in the same country.

Students from the University of Cagliari can take part in BIP activities abroad through a dedicated call for applications.
