Key Action 1 is renewed in the Erasmus+ 2021-2027 programme with the introduction of Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). Developed by groups of Higher Education Institutions with an innovative pedagogical approach, BIPs involve short periods of face-to-face activities combined with online learning and cooperation, in which joint groups of students, teaching and administrative staff from different countries can participate to collaborate on specific tasks collectively and simultaneously.

In a mixed intensive programme (BIP), the virtual component is compulsory, and the use of digital technologies enables the institutions involved both to improve their capacity to implement innovative teaching and learning methods and to reach a wider number of learners, also involving students from subject areas with limited mobility opportunities.

A Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) may arise from an existing programme that is revamped in its delivery methods, or it may be entirely new, focusing on specific topics not taught elsewhere. The innovative formula of mixed intensive programmes is designed for the development of transnational and transdisciplinary curricula, innovative teaching and learning methods, including online collaboration, as well as to stimulate research-based learning through a challenge-based approach strongly connected to the current context.

Mixed intensive programmes must award at least 3 ECTS credits to students.
