The University of Cagliari Prison Campus (PUP) was established within the context of the National Conference of Delegates of the Rectors (CNUPP) in April 2018, with the primary objective of guaranteeing the right to academic study to people in a state of deprivation of liberty: this falls fully in line with the university’s first mission.
Thanks to a growing collaboration, an increasing number of Italian universities are committed to guaranteeing the right to study to those detained through educational and training activities. There are currently 43 national universities with educational and training activities, involving around 100 prison institutions and 1,400 students.
In the 2022-23 Academic Year, the University of Cagliari Prison Campus boasts 22 university students (21 men and a woman): 7 are guests at the Uta Prison House, 11 at Massama Prison and 4 in alternative measures.
The involved faculties are:
- Faculty of Engineering and Architecture
- Faculty of Economics, Law, and Political Sciences
- Faculty of Humanities
- Faculty of Sciences
- Faculty of Medicine and Surgery
The first PUP graduate earned his title on 29 September 2022 in Economics and Management of Tourist Services. The ceremony took place in the Massama Prison (OR) in the presence of the Rector, the thesis supervisor Daniela Pettinao and the Degree Commission.
UniCa’s Prison Campus participates in the National Assemblies of the CNUPP every six months.
