The Departments of Excellence represent an intervention of strong financial support, introduced by the 2017 budget law, which aims to identify and finance 180 departments of state universities, on the basis of the results obtained in the Research Quality Assessment (VQR) exercise. 

Every five years, the Ministry of University and Research identifies 350 university departments that can compete for the call of excellence departments for the presentation of a five-year development project, in which are defined objectives attributable to scientific and educational purposes of high qualification.

Law and Electrical/Electronical Engineering are the two single departments that have been awarded the funding of the «Departments of Excellence 2023-2027» for a total amount of 13,692,025.00 euros.
