Key Action 1 has been renewed under the Erasmus+ 2021–2027 programme with the introduction of Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). Developed by groups of higher education institutions adopting an innovative pedagogical approach, BIPs combine short periods of face-to-face activities with online learning and cooperation. These programmes bring together joint groups of students, academic, and administrative staff from different countries to collaborate on specific tasks collectively and simultaneously.

In a BIP, the virtual component is compulsory, and the use of digital technologies enables the participating institutions both to enhance their capacity to implement innovative teaching and learning methods and to reach a wider number of learners, including students from subject areas with limited mobility opportunities.

A BIP may be based on an existing programme redesigned in terms of delivery methods, or it may be entirely new, focusing on specific topics not addressed elsewhere. This innovative format is intended to support the development of transnational and transdisciplinary curricula, foster the use of innovative teaching and learning methods (including online collaboration), and promote research-based learning through a challenge-based approach closely aligned with current societal contexts.

Blended Intensive Programmes must award at least 3 ECTS credits to participating students.
