Elio Usai graduated with honours in Electrical Engineering in 1985 at the University of Cagliari, discussing the thesis "Excellent control in minimum time of forest systems"; he’s full professor (SSD ING-INF/04 Automatic) at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Cagliari since October 2015 (previously, he has been researcher from 1994 to 2000, and associate professor from 2000 to 2015). Before, he worked as production manager of auxiliary services and technologist at Enichem in Porto Torres (1988/1994) and at the Research and Development Department of Pirelli Cavi SpA (Laboratori di Milano, 1987/1988).

Coordinator of the University Quality Presidium since October 2015, he has held various and important university positions and, since 2015, that of President of the academic spin-off SitAut ltd. His scientific activity concerns the general aspects of systems theory and the control, estimation, and diagnosis of processes, currently with particular attention to the issues: Variable structure systems, Observatories for uncertain nonlinear systems and model-based fault diagnosis, Control and estimation in multi-agent systems, Uncertain infinite dimensional systems, Robust output-feedback of non-linear systems.

Professor Usai has been Visiting professor at the Technical University of Graz (Austria, 2016) and External Auditor/Commissioner for PhD theses at foreign universities such as the Faculty of Engineering, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad, Pakistan; ITT Mumbay, India; University of Hull, UK; École Centrale de Nantes, France; Elio Usai is a lecturer in various disciplines of the scientific discipline ING-INF/04 Automatic at UniCa, as well as in various training courses. He has worked as  thesis supervisor, tutor of doctoral students, for research grants and contracts, for doctoral students of foreign universities; he evaluated research projects on behalf of Italian and French institutions, over the years he imposed himself as a research team leader and researcher.He can also boast several collaborations with companies and industries (FST Atlantis Group, Hydrocontrol, Microsystems Milan, Ansaldo Energia Finmeccanica Genova Group, Elianto Srl, Abbanoa SpA).

As author, co-author and editor of books and articles in international journals, as well as Associate Editor of international journals, he won the "Best paper award" at CASYS 2000. Member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Variable Structure and Sliding Mode Control since 2016, he has participated and organised numerous sessions in international conferences and congresses, also in the capacity of auditor. His name is also linked to the Italian patent "Method and apparatus for the dynamic positioning of an object moving in a fluid" (inventors: A. Pisano. G. Bartolini, E.Usai, T. Zolezzi, E. Punta, V. Arrichiello).
