He graduated in 1984 in Pavia as a pupil of the Almo Collegio Borromeo; he worked between 1985 and 1999 in numerous Italian and foreign institutions. Since 1999, he has been working at the University of Cagliari, and since 2002 he has been a full professor of theoretical physics. Since 2015, he has been appointed Corresponding Member of the Lombard Institute – Academy of Sciences and Letters.

At the University of Cagliari, he has been Coordinator of the PhD in Physics, Director of the Physics Department, representative of the scientific-technological areas in the Council of the UniCaPRESS Centre; he is also a member of the College of Discipline.

He researched for more than 30 years on the physics of (nano) materials for advanced applications: this has allowed him to publish 276 papers in international journals and 8 books. He has held the role of scientific manager in many regional, national, and European projects. He has been a mentor of more than 100 students, at degree, doctoral and post-doctoral levels. He participates in the editorial board of the "Rivista del Nuovo Cimento" and of "The European Phsyical Journal - Plus". He has been awarded international prizes and awards by the IEEE Computer Society, NATO, and the European Metrology Research Project.
